Kornikov A.A. Heraldry of the Nizhny Novgorod region: from medieval symbols to the coats of arms of modern municipalities

The object of research of this work is the heraldry of the Nizhny Novgorod region from the Middle Ages to the present. For the first time in the historiography of Russian heraldry, the history and development of the coats of arms of this region are considered, a comprehensive analysis of the current state of the coats of arms of municipalities is given. It is shown that the formation of Nizhny Novgorod heraldry in the XVII—XIX centuries was associated with the development of the administrative-territorial division of the first Russian state, and then the Russian Empire, the need to create emblems symbolizing the territory of this region. The revival of the heraldry of the Nizhny Novgorod region in the early 1990s was due to the adoption of the Constitution of 1993, as well as the laws on local self-government of 1995 and 2003. The main groups of modern coats of arms of municipal districts, urban districts, urban and rural settlements are distinguished. The continuity in the development of pre- revolutionary and modern coats of arms is considered. Based on the analysis of the origin and symbolism of individual coats of arms, estimates of the prospects for further development of the heraldic space of the region are given. The features of Nizhny Novgorod heraldry that distinguish it from the heraldry of other regions of the Russian Federation are noted.
