Gubanov S.A. Epithetation of concept “mind” in M. Tsvetaeva’s poetry

DOI: 10.46726/H.2026.3.5

The article is devoted to the study of the specifics of concept “mind” epithetation in Marina Tsvetaeva’s poetry. The work establishes that the concept under consideration and its attributes (wise, intelligent, reasonable) actualize the meaning of the mind not only as the ability to abstract thinking, but also as spirit, spiritual wisdom, which returns to the medieval idea of the mind as a synthesis of reason and spirit. The directions of epithetation of the mind in in M. Tsvetaeva’s poetry are presented both by anthropomorphic metaphorical transfers and zoomorphic models, tautological epithet constructions that enhance the attribute of wisdom. Attention is drawn to the fundamental unlimitedness of the sphere of expansion of the attribute, which confirms the idea of total attribute designation in the poet's idiolect. The article presents an overview of the main directions of epithetation of the concept “mind”, as well as the main areas of distribution of the attributes intelligent and wise. It is noted that in M. Tsvetaeva’s poetry, the semantics of a cold mind is actualized as the impossibility of loving and suffering, while wisdom is associated with the ability to love. In relation to the figurative modeling of the attribute wise, metonymic epithet dominates, whereas in the epithetation of intelligence, metonymy and metaphor occupy approximately equal positions.
