The article deals with the notion “neologism” in its lexicographic aspect. Contemporary dictionaries have become massive information portals, which give the authors of dictionaries wide opportunities to involve the readers into lexicographic activities as well as to publish most updated content. The article is based on so called open dictionaries, which are the product of volunteer lexicography, as well as on blogs and new words sections of the dictionaries. The novelty of the research is seen in systematization of the material, in the attempt to describe most frequent semantic groups where the new words of the English language appear. Those words were selected both by professional lexicographers as well as by non-professional readers. Semantic and structural features of the new words are considered, productive ways of word formation are illustrated, main semantic groups are indicated. The hypothesis is made that the new words can reveal the trends, tendencies and problems of the contemporary society.
