The most relevant methods of user participation in the lexicographic process, such as questionnaires, are highlighted, as well as various types of user contributions to the compilation of dictionaries and encyclopedias. Knowledge, selection and implementation of methods of user participation are necessary for the correct planning of new and revision of existing lexicographic publications. Analyzed are already proven and widely practiced methods, as well as new ones that have become possible through social networking technologies and have made user participation a mass phenomenon. The problems of a new lexicographic trend — joint lexicography — are discussed, which allows users to directly make changes to reference books. The importance of research in a new area, namely in the study of the contribution of users to the process of creating reference books, is emphasized.
