The article discusses the features of the distribution of Jewish military personnel in the army of the Russian Empire in 1827—1874. Jews were one of the discriminated confessional groups in the period under review. Discrimination of Jews was manifested not only in enhanced recruiting, but also in the distribution of Jews in army units. The paper analyzes the main legal acts that regulate the distribution of military personnel to reveal the topic. Three stages were identified, during which there were significant changes in the policy on the part of the military department in the issue of choosing army units for representatives of the diaspora. The work identifies units of the armed forces in which the appearance of Jews was undesirable, and vice versa, where representatives of the diaspora were sent in the first place. The problem of identifying Jews for service in the navy is considered. It is concluded that when distributing Jews for military service, the military department was guided primarily by political considerations, and not by practical ones. There was a process of gradual elimination of discrimination in the distribution of Jewish servicemen in army units during the period under review. However, this process by 1874 did not have time to complete.
