Martyushev A.V. The Czech-German confrontation in the Austro-Hungarian Empire on the pages of Karl Kraus' die Fackel magazine

DOI: 10.46726/H.2026.3.11

The article is devoted to one of the aspects of the problem related to the CzechGerman confrontation in Austria-Hungary at the turn of the XIX—XX centuries. Based
on the materials of the popular Viennese magazine die Fackel, the author tried to determine the position of its publisher and main author Karl Kraus on the national issue. Despite the interest of researchers in the intellectual legacy of Kraus, this issue has been little studied in both Russian and foreign historiography. The study revealed that Kraus' peak interest in the Czech problem occurred in 1899—1901, after which mentions of Czechs practically disappear from the pages of the magazine, which roughly coincides with the debate in society around the language laws of Badeni. As part of the confrontation between the two nations, Kraus tried to take a stand above the fray, criticizing both German and Czech nationalists, although there was much more criticism from the Germans. In itself, this confrontation was not interesting to him. He was not speaking out against any side, but rather against the arguments that the Czechs and Germans were making in their favor.
