The review examines the value of the publication of the commented translation in Russian “The History of Spain” by Alfonso X the Wise. This chronicle — the most important monument of the Spanish medieval epoch of the 13th century — has not been translated into any European language. Certainly, a project to translate such a specific ancient text as “The History of Spain” is actually grandiose event in the history of Russian and world science. In addition, the review notes that this edition is a great research work, since the translation is accompanied by extensive professional comments on all those aspects that may raise questions from the readers. The article also stresses the importance of the interdisciplinary nature of the research, since historians and philologists worked together on the project under the direction of Oleg V. Aurov. The high scientific level of the edition and its compliance with modern research in the field of Castilian historiography ensures the participation of leading European and Spanish Medieval researches and specialists in the epoch of King Alfonso X in its preparation. The translation of the Old Castile chronicle will certainly be of interest not only to specialists in the history and culture of medieval Spain, but also to everyone interested in West European history.
