The article is devoted to some aspects of the process of protection, reconstruction and museumification of ancient cities, which took place in the USSR in the 1960s and 1980s.The use of foreign experience of museumification is analyzed. In particular, the reconstruction of Cambridge in the UK is analyzed in detail. Analogies are drawn between similar processes in the Soviet Union. As an example, the process of reconstruction and museumification of Suzdal is analyzed. The authors find common features in these processes. The process of reconstruction of medieval cities was accompanied by the creation of an appropriate regulatory framework. This can be seen both in the UK and in the USSR. The authors used a variety of sources and literature. Among them are review works on architecture and urban construction, articles from popular magazines. Discussions concerning the choice of ways to reconstruct ancient cities were studied in detail. The course of these disputes in Great Britain and in the USSR as a whole reflected general trends: in both countries architects chose the way of reconstructing and adapting ancient cities to the modern environment.
