There exist two almost never overlapping trends in teaching languages (including grammar): prescriptive and descriptive approaches. While the former focuses on establishing a certain set of quite rigid rules, the given language can but obey, the former attempts at describing and explaining the real usage of the language without necessarily coming to the ‘right vs. wrong’ verdict. The article casts doubt on certain traditionally defined grammar rules as well as presents some reflections on the possible ways to understand the structure of English better and more adequately.
