The article examines the state of Ivanovo-Vosnesensk hydro system in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and characterizes the inland waters of the city — rivers, streams, ponds, wells. The author concludes that the city’s water resources were not sufficient for a large industrial center. These water sources were used by textile mills for their manufacturing process, as well as by the local population for household use. The paint production, which was quite developed in Ivanovo-Vosnesensk, had a very negative impact on the natural environment, as its waste in the form of synthetic paints, fuel oil, etc. without any cleaning was dumped into the river Uvod. As a result, in the late 19th century, this river turned into a foulsmelling sewage ditch, all living organisms in its water died. The main blame for this environmental disaster rested with local industrialists. Not having an environmental consciousness, they did not understand the serious consequences of their activities and did not want to spend money on cleaning factory dumps.
