Kornikov A.A. Heraldry of the Vologda region: from imperial symbols to the coats of arms of modern municipalities

The object of the study is the heraldry of the Vologda Region from the Middle Ages to the present. For the first time in the historiography of Russian heraldry, the history and development of the coats of arms of this region are considered, and a comprehensive analysis of the current state of the coats of arms of municipalities is given. It is shown that the formation of Vologda heraldry in the XVIII—XIX centuries was associated with the appearance of Russian regiments banners at the beginning of the XVIII century and the reform of the administrative-territorial system in the XVIII century. The revival of heraldry in the Vologda Region in the early 1990s was due to the adoption of the 1993 Constitution, as well as the laws on local government in 1995 and 2003. The main groups of modern coats of arms of municipal districts, urban districts, urban and rural settlements are shown. The continuity in the development of historical and modern coats of arms is considered. The origin and symbolism of individual coats of arms are analyzed, and the prospects for further development of the heraldic space of the region are assessed. The peculiarities of Vologda heraldry, which distinguishes it from the heraldry of other regions of the Russian Federation, are noted.
