Using the example of the features analysis of E.N. Chirikov's play “Ivan Mironich”, the paper solves the problem of the “new drama” development in Russia after
A.P. Chekhov. The Chekhov code is chosen as a tool for analyzing the work due to the importance for the formation of Chirikov (as the playwright) of his meeting Chekhov and working together on the play with the Moscow Art Theater, in particular with K.S. Stanislavsky and V.V. Luzhsky, who were engaged in staging the play in the theater. Influenced by the emerging traditions of the early twentieth century, Chirikov revisits the role of a dramatic event. It mainly takes place in the off-stage space. The action is based on a new type of conflict. The actions of the characters of the play indicate life contradictions that cannot be resolved by the volitional efforts of individuals. At the same time, Chirikov creates an image of a dramatic hero, which only partially corresponds to the settings of the Chekhov version of the “new drama”. As a result, the work proves that, following Chekhov and his theater, Chirikov limits the director's ability to speak on topics other than those presented in the play. This is the reason for the peculiarities of the stage life of the plays by “Ivan Mironich’s” author.
