The work examines the activities of the department of state property in the Nizhny Novgorod province to protect the interests of the treasury and state peasants in the middle of the 19th century. On the basis of archival materials, the structure of crimes and misconduct of state peasants of the Nizhny Novgorod province, as well as the punishment to which they were subjected, were studied. The duties of the solicitor of the chamber of state property are considered in detail. It was concluded that the system of volost and rural reprisals, which were under the jurisdiction of the Chamber of State Property, was cumbersome and ineffective. At the same time, the system made it possible to punish peasants for misconduct without using the methods of imprisonment, which made it possible to keep workers inside society as well as keep peasant families.
