The article examines the currently relevant problem of reception and interaction of various national cultures. In this connection, the plays “The Danishevs”, written by P.V. Korvin-Krukovsky together with A. Dumas-son, and “The Foster Child” by A.N. Ostrovsky are compared. In the process of reviewing these texts, a new factual material is introduced into scientific use, which allows us to study the reaction to the picture of Russian life in the XIX century presented in the drama “The Danishevs” from both French and Russian viewers. As a result, the comparison makes it possible to show the mechanism of artistic transformation of Russian reality, presented in Ostrovsky's dramaturgy, in accordance with the stereotypes that had been formed by that time in the perception of Russia abroad.
