This article describes the functioning of the terms halal and haram in the Russian language texts. The two words are actively used in modern Russian speech, but are not described either in scientific writings or in dictionaries. It is shown that these words designate important concepts that define the area of prohibitions and permissions in the personal and public life of Muslims. The numerous examples of the use of these words presented in the article, extracted from the “National Corpus of the Russian Language” and other sources, will give the reader an idea about the form and meanings in which they are used, their compatibility with other words, as well as the words derived from these two terms. The establishment of the formal and substantial properties of the words described in the article and the specifics of their use allow, on the one hand, to see the connection between the meanings of these lexical units with the corresponding “Islamic” concepts and the peculiarities of their presentation in different speech situations and, on the other hand, to notice the changes that they undergo in the process of functioning in the Russian language. The article indicates that a full and objective description of words thematically related to Islam and Muslim culture will help overcome Islamophobia and ensure favorable conditions for communication in a multinational and multicultural environment.
