Pokhalenkov O. E., Frolova E. A. The theme of the war in the collection of short stories by E. M. Remarque “Annette’s Love Story”

The article deals with the theme of the war in the collection of short stories by E. M. Remarque ―Annette‘s Love Story‖, which Remarque wrote in the period from 1930 up to 1931, between two most important novels ―All quiet on the Western Front‖ and ―The road back‖. Unlike the novels, Remarque‘s stories are still insufficiently studied not only in Russia, but also in the writer‘s homeland. All six short stories are included in the collection (―The Enemy‖, ―The Silence around Verdun‖, ―Karl Breger in Fleury‖, ―Josef‘s Wife‖, ―The Strange Fate of Johann Bartok‖ and ―Annette‘s Love Story‖). Besides the theme of the war, a number of other problems either already previously posed by the writer or just outlined in his future novels are delved into.
