The article examines the concepts of culture, created in the classical era, such as: “time”, “progress”, “modernity with its problems”, which have firmly entered our everyday language. It is shown that they largely determine our thinking, allowing to act effectively in typical situations. Their ambivalence is revealed in situations requiring out-of-the-box thinking, when they also hinder our success. It is noted that in a globalizing world people often move, adapting to new places, striving to settle them down. The conclusion is made that in this existential movement the feeling of home and comfort is lost, alienation from the world and loneliness are felt. The author sees rethinking of the category “place” as a way of overcoming this situation, filling it with a philosophical and cultural meaning.
