The article deals with ambiguity in political media discourse as exemplified by publications on the events in the Kerch Strait in 2018. It describes the difference
between the meaning and sense, polysemy and ambiguity, and defines the phenomenon under study. By the example of the word “aggression” the paper illustrates its dictionary definitions, as well as various contexts in media discourse; it emphasizes different cases of pragmatically driven ambiguity and its evaluative characterizing function and function of attention attraction and image creation.
