This research is devoted to the problems of translation of food as one of the most informative symbols of culture. The article presents the results of the analysis and the comparison of the peculiarities of translation strategies' usage and the factors which determined their choice when translating the gastronomic discourse of the novel “Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone” by J. K. Rowling into Russian and Greek. The author concludes that the leading strategy of the Russian translation was the use of techniques focused on foreignization, while the Greek translation is more characterized by cultural
adaptation, which is the result of the strategy of domestication. The following methods were made use of in the article: the method of comparison and collation, descriptive methods, methods of analysis and classification.
