Kotsyubinskaya L. V., Кalinina S. V. To the question of neonyms’ classification in the english terminology of oil refining

The article is devoted to the classification of new linguistic units of the oil refining term system recorded within the industry lexicographic source in the time period from 1962 to 1975. Attention is paid to the identification of extra linguistic prerequisites for the emergence of terminological neologisms. The process of neologization is considered in accordance with the general linguistic principles of economy and analogy. The relevance of the article is determined by the need to organize new terminological units; the novelty is seen in the proposed structural and semantic classification of the sublanguage neologisms. The results of the study confirm the subordination of new terminological units' formation methods to general methods of term formation; the results also confirm the extra linguistic factors’ influence on the industry terminology completion. The analysis carried out for the purpose of the term system harmonization allows us to establish trends in nominative processes, to identify the most productive ways to create industry-specific neonyms. The postfix method prevalence of term formation using a large number of Latin and Greek elements is revealed. There are neonyms formed by the prefix method; agglutinated and non-derived terminological units are presented. Complex terms have a graphic design. Compoundings contain common and special vocabulary. Word combinations are represented minimally. The conversion with the preferred direction of the derivative was detected in the conversion pair Adj => N. The semantic division of the selected neonyms revealed the presence of anthropocentrism, one of the fundamental tenets of the modern linguistic paradigm, manifested in the metaphorization of the general vocabulary Classification of the selected linguistic units by conceptual areas is ranked as follows: “properties and characteristics”, “substances and materials”, “processes”, “equipment”, “methods and techniques”.
