Тhe article is devoted to the study of pre-revolutionary coats of arms of some cities in three regions of the upper Volga area — the provinces of Vladimir, Kostroma and Yaroslavl’. The process of developing and approving of their coats of arms is described, some groups of city coats of arms are specified, their quantitative indices are presented. The article analyzes the symbolism of urban emblems. The influence of pre-revolutionary coats of arms on modern Russian urban heraldry is shown.
