Kokurina I.V., Opolovnikova M.V. Representation of the idiomatic image of the peace pipe in german-language cartoon

The article examines the potential use of the phraseological unit “die Friedenspfeife rauchen” in German-language cartoons. The authors note that this phraseological unit was borrowed from American English and has been widely used since the late 19th century. It was found that the idiomatic image of the peace pipe is reflected in both the verbal and iconic components of the creolized text, which is explained by the transparent internal form of the phraseological unit. It is noted that each component of the phraseological unit under study has a relatively independent meaning, which allows for modification of the idiom when included in various contexts. The authors conclude that the pragmatic potential of the phraseological unit “die Friedenspfeife rauchen” when used in cartoons includes not only situations of conflict resolution but also contexts related to the ban on smoking in public. Furthermore, cases of the idiomatic image of the peace pipe being used to axiologically characterize political figures and their actions were identified. It is noted that in polycode texts, the use of phraseological units can be accompanied by other expressive means. It is emphasized that the inclusion of a figurative idiom in the structure of a cartoon allows for a comic effect, conveys an evaluative message, and the author’s intention concisely and convincingly.
