Khristenko D. N. The gulf war (1990—1991) in the memoirs of american president George H. W. Bush

The article analyzes the recollections of the American President George H. W. Bush about the Gulf War based on personal diary entries. The most significant issues for the head of the White House during the preparation and conduct of a military operation against the Iraqi armed forces are noted. Among them are complex relations with Congress, dissatisfaction with the coverage of hostilities in the media, the desire to overcome the «Vietnamese syndrome», disagreements with the Soviet President M. Gorbachev, contradictory results of the war. The controversial nature of the memories of the American president is noted. For example, there are confirmed the assertions of George H. W. Bush that a significant part of the media was critical of the military plans of his administration. This is especially evident in the example of the television company CNN. On the other hand, the American president often seeks to deliberately exaggerate his achievements. In conclusion, it is stated that there is a discrepancy between George H. W. Bush's self-perception as a decisive leader who won the Gulf War (1990—1991) and the tragic consequences of hostilities both for the Middle East region and for the United States.
