This article is devoted to the problem of translating into German the names of the works of art, in particular the canvases by I. Levitan. The names of the work of art, artionyms, have a vivid national and cultural specificity, as far as their meanings go back to the culture of the native speaker, as well as to the personality of the author himself. Very often, the name of the work of art is also overlaid with the specifics of a particular language (syntax, grammar, vocabulary, stylistics). And since the artionym affects visual and auditory perception, while forming a person’s sense of beauty, this unit of language requires special attention while translating into another language. The analysis of the translation into German of the names of Levitan’s canvases showed some inaccuracies in the transfer of the meaning of the title of the work, which leads to distorted presentation of information for speakers of the German culture, while an adequate translation of the artionym ensures the correct perception of the canvas and understanding of the artist’s intention.
