The article is devoted to the development of ideas about the fate of Palladius Rogovsky, the first Russian Doctor of Philosophy and theology. The heritage of Palladius for the Russian intellectual culture of the XVIII — early XIX century meant a turn to the Catholic philosophical and theological tradition. The development of the historiographical situation around the figure of Palladius Rogovsky is analyzed. The author shows that in 1791, Damaskin (Semenov-Rudnev) unwittingly, due to the limited source base, mythologized the figure of Palladius Rogovsky. The fate of his handwritten heritage is being characterized, in the preservation of which Bishop Dosifey (Glebov) of Rostov and Yaroslavl and Metropolitan Isaiah of Nizhny Novgorod and Alatyr played a major role. The author notes that both hierarchs were persecuted by the government of Peter I as reactionaries. They could see Catholicism as a better remedy against Peter’s modernization than traditional Greek education. At the same time, Raphael Zaborovsky and Damaskin (Semenov-Rudnev), who also did a lot to preserve and disseminate the heritage of Palladius, used it mainly for the development of philosophical education in the province. The debunking of the historiographical myth of Palladium as a victim of the “pursuit of knowledge” occurred only in the twentieth century thanks to the publication of documents from the archives of the Catholic Church.
