Grigoryan A.A. Language, stereotypes and gender studies: on some tendencies

Robin Lakoff’s seminal book “Language and Woman’s Place” devoted to gender and language interplay gave rise to a number of research projects aiming to prove
or refute professor’s insights. Basically, the scholars attempted to prove that men and women speak and are spoken of differently. This binary essentialist approach based on the idea that human beings simply ‘have gender’ prevailed for quite a long time. Around the turn of the centuries another approach emerged focusing on the performative character, on ‘doing gender’. At present, such approach to understanding gender-language interplay is dominant in gender studies.
