The review examines the monograph by A.V. Kuznetsov “West Siberian counterculture of the 1980—1990s as a sociocultural phenomenon.” The uniqueness of this book is shown in the general context of recently published books about the West Siberian local rock scene and some of its most prominent representatives; This uniqueness lies in a clearly expressed sociological and cultural orientation, and specifically in the scientific, research aspect of both sociology and cultural studies, or more precisely, historical sociology and cultural studies. This essentially interdisciplinary approach allows the author of the monograph to offer a holistic understanding of a phenomenon extraordinary for the history of Russian culture, to see the object of his research — the West Siberian counterculture — from different sides, to show various aspects of its existence in the last two decades of the twentieth century, and to some extent — in twenty-first century; All this is done through systematization, generalization and comprehension of numerous and inherently diverse facts related to Russian (primarily West Siberian) rock in a countercultural sense and a clear demonstration of the directions in which we can move further in the study of such non-trivial and multi-level material.
