The author of the article makes an attempt to study works of A.N. Ostrovsky through the lens of primary speech genres (based on M.M. Bakhtin’s and A.D. Stepanov’s research). This research can be conducted in different directions. For example, the author demonstrates exploration of some situations in Ostrovsky’s plays when the characters make certain speech blunders leading to miscommunication (from failure of the plans to committing crimes). In the author’s opinion, the reasons of these blunders were the mistakes in realisation of primary speech genres made by characters (for example, non-compliance of etiquette norms, neglect of the collocutor’s emotions, tactlessness) and non-use of appropriate speech genre (for example, one character may hurt another one and for-get to apologize). Basing on plays “Ne v svoi sany ne sadis”, “Groza”, “Za chem poydesh, to i naydesh”, “Bespridannitsa”, the author shows that learning Ostrovsky’s plays through the lens of primary speech genres can to a certain extent lead to the reconsideration of characters and plots of Ostrovsky’s plays.
