The article is the first attempt to consider the activities of small medical institutions that were established in the second half of the 19th century at almost all large and medium-sized factories and plants of such an important industrial center as Ivanovo-Voznesensk. The article is based on the materials of the state archives of Ivanovo and Vladimir regions. Most of the employed archival materials have never been used for scientific research before. The article provides statistical data on the number of beds in the factory hospitals as well as on the medical personnel who worked in them. The author analyses a complex of various diseases and injuries with which workers sought medical attention in factory hospitals. As the study showed, specialists with higher education worked only on a part-time basis in these medical institutions. They examined sick workers only for 2 to 3 hours a day. Only medical assistants worked permanently in factory hospitals. Often, their professional qualifications were not enough to help a worker who had health problems. Thus, medical care in factory hospitals was of lower quality than in municipal hospitals or other medical institutions.
