The work is done on the basis of the detective novel “Deadly Harvest” by Carolyn Walker. The definitions of “discourse”, “fictional discourse”, “dialogue” and “utterance” are presented. A detailed analysis of the utterances in the English dialogue is made, linguistic expressive means revealing their pragmatic functions are studied. The aim of the work is to study the linguistic expressive means of utterances in the English dialogical discourse and their pragmatic characteristics at all the language levels. As a result of the English utterances analysis the author comes to the conclusion that at the lexical level the English dialogue is dominated by abbreviated words, intensifiers, swear words or their euphemisms, interjections and interjectional expressions, introductory words, phrases, etiquette formulas, etc. The listed linguistic expressive means contribute to successful communication, its natural sounding, emotional aspect, etc. The utterances of the English dialogue can be characterized by the following morphological features: they contain the first and second person pronouns, abbreviations, contracted verb forms, analytical emphatic forms, phrasal verbs and verb combinations, etc. Among the syntactic characteristics of the utterances, the author points out: syntactically simple sentences, elliptical phrases and sentences, questions in the form of an affirmative sentence, the subjunctive mood constructions, etc. Thus, the English dialogue consists of interlocutors’ utterances characterized by specific phonetic, lexical, grammatical and stylistic peculiarities that realize the pragmatic function of the interlocutors’ utterances. These characteristics present the two-way verbal form of speech.
