Since 2020 our world has been experiencing upheavals associated with the emergence of a new coronavirus infection and its development to the scale of the pandemic. Against this background they began to pay more attention to other infectious diseases whose outbreaks periodically occur in a particular region of the world. During the pandemic groups of people who have been in an enclosed space for a long time without the possibility of prolonged exposure to fresh air have become the most vulnerable. Prisonmates have become one of these social groups. In his article the author turned to the experience of the past in epidemic control measures within a single prison. The files of the State Archive of Kursk Oblast (SAKO) containing information about the course of the typhoid epidemic in Kursk governoratal prison in 1908—1909 as well as issues of Turemny Vestnic (Prison Bulletin) for the same time period are analyzed. The time intervals of the epidemic's passage through successive phases identifying by a modern epidemiology and the predominance of typhus over its other forms are established; mortality rates are calculated. The main groups of recommendations for control of the typhus epidemic by the General Prison Administration and local officials associated with health care system and penitentiary institution are identified. It was found that the time restrictions on the passage of stages through Kursk Governorate became only a secondary measure in typhoid epidemic control measures in 1908—1909.
