DOI: 10.46726/H.2026.1.4

The article examines the issue of cultural identity of Ilya Zdanevich and Boris Poplavsky. Russian Russian emigration's first wave of writers is eclectic. I. Zdanevich and B. Poplavsky, as representatives of the “younger” generation of the first wave of Russian emigration, were familiar with Russian literature and showed openness to the new cultural experience of the world avant-garde. It is important to determine the degree of influence of this experience. I. Zdanevich followed the experiments of futurists, wrote abstruse dramas himself. How-ver, he criticized futurism and suggested a more open to the cultural experience of all times as an alternative. The article analyzes in detail the novel by I. Zdanevich “Admiration” in the context of the history of futurism. B. Poplavsky is often considered to be a representative of surrealism. Thematically, the work of B. Poplavsky and the Surrealists is similar: for example, in the collection “Automatic Poems” special attention is paid to the iconic theme of sleep for surrealists. But did B. Poplavsky and the Surrealists address this topic with the same purpose? The ideological content of the works of I. Zdanevich and B. Poplavsky is analyzed by us in order to determine whether it is relevant to classify the authors in the above-mentioned directions.
