The article is a review — an expert opinion on the study by Ya.A. Levin, dedicated to the history of state security agencies — the US FBI. It is shown that the monograph has a pronounced source study and historiographic novelty, consisting in the neutralization of various “conspiracy” theories and other tendentious interpretations. A wide corpus of documents is used, of which the materials of criminal cases that directly reflect the operational activities of the Bureau in neutralizing “enemies of society no. 1” are of particular interest. Some controversial aspects related to the need to maintain a critical approach to the
control and repressive functionality of the special services, the prospects for expanding the imagological approach to represent everyday life, the mentality of both government agents and representatives of the criminal world are also identified.
