Using the example of the largest metropolitan periodicals of the early 1990s, the article analyzes the assessments that were given to North Ossetia in the Russian central press of those years. The media materials of various political views are used as a source. The following aspects became the subject of interest of the capital's journalists in those years: the political regime that existed in the republic, its complex relations with its closest neighbors and the difficult criminal situation. The participation of the Russian military in normalizing the situation in the region was also mentioned in the press. An important place among the publications of the leading federal mass media was also occupied by reports on the tragic Ossetian-Ingush conflict in the autumn of 1992. In this confrontation, the Russian press was more sympathetic to the Ossetian side as a force defending stability and law and order in the North Caucasus. Even the illegal detention of some journalists or the hostage-taking of Ingush families will have not changed this opinion. It is concluded that, compared to its alarming neighbors (Chechnya, Ingushetia) or other republics of the region, North Ossetia looked like a stable entity, and the political conservatism of its leaders was inferior to loyalty to the federal Center.
