The article is devoted to media discourse, in the context of the implementation of symbolic politics understood as a semiotic space for the production of interpretations of social reality and the formation of political consciousness and thinking. Mosaic nature is noted as an apriori characteristic of the mass political consciousness. The author’s definition of media discourse is proposed. The concepts of N. Luhmann’s autopoiesis and N. Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis are problematized. The “symbolic” functions of the media discourse in relation to the mass political consciousness are determined. The methods of forming a regional media discourse during the coronavirus pandemic in the Ivanovo region in 2020—2021 are summarized. It is concluded that media discourse, acting as a means of translating norms and ideological values, in the concept of symbolic politics turns out to be a medium for introducing and translating interpretations of social reality.
