The paper aims to perform a comparative study of autonomous derivatives with the -gate component in Bulgarian, Russian, Polish, and Ukrainian languages. The research materials are blogs, websites, electronic versions of newspapers for 2018—2020. We use the general scientific methods of continuous sampling, general scientific methods of analysis, comparison, generalization, and statistical processing of data. We propose the following working model for the study of autonomous derivatives with the -gate component: 1) examination of lexemes from the point of view of origin, i.e., identification of interlingual and intralingual language units; 2) definition of thematic groups of words; 3) establishing ways to conceptualize the denotative situation of the scandal; 4) comparison of the spelling of words with the -gate component; 5) assessing the pragmatic potential of derivatives. We have established the following general patterns and tendencies: prevalence of the thematic group “Politics”; the variant spelling of words, etc. We have revealed the following differences: low derivational activity of nomina propria during the formation of derivatives with the -gate component in the Bulgarian language; the area source “participant in the scandal + occupation of the participants in the scandal” with the metonymic conceptualization of the denotative situation of the scandal with the help of autonomous derivatives with the -gate component is found only in Russian discourse.
