Nowadays linguistics is actively engaged in the study of text, its features, functions and properties in an interdisciplinary perspective, thus, a special branch of linguistic science has been formed, called “Text Linguistics” or “Text Theory”. The article discusses contemporary approaches in linguistics to the analysis of educational texts, as well as the problem of assessing the complexity of texts in English textbooks, developed on the basis of the following linguistic and statistical parameters: sentence length, word length, the Flesch–Kincaid readability index, narrative and lexical diversity. The significance of the research is seen in the further prospects for the development of teaching methods and the study of the concept of “educational text”, in the development of the ability to conduct linguistic analysis of the educational text at different levels of the language. The purpose of this study is to describe contemporary approaches to assessing the complexity of an educational text based on the example of linguistic analysis of the texts of two A1+ level English textbooks.
