In the traditional framework of the study of the theme “Ostrovsky and Groboedov” the researches view mainly the possibility of comparing Chatsky to the male characters of Ostrovsky. The author of the article makes an assumption that in the series of Ostrovsky’s works the role of the character-ideologist translates from a man to a woman. The most peculiar in this respect is the play “Captured Women” (“Novolnitsi”) where Ostrovsky presents an educated woman as the main character that is unique for his creative work. The article shows the specificity of transformation of the canon of “a character in a tailcoat” coming from Griboedov’s times and its use in creating the character of a woman. The author of the article finds the affinity of the conflicts, the plot intrigues in the plays by Griboedov and Ostrov-sky as well as the similarity of the main character of “Captured Women” Eulalia to Chatsky and Sofia, and of the other characters to Molchalin, Famusov, Liza. Another similarity between the two comedies is the depth of the drama in their final scenes.
