The article deals with the problem of determining the future model of the university in the context of growing social variability. It is shown that the university as a significant institution is largely determined by the external environment. It is substantiated that a reliable assessment of the current situation is a condition not only for the development, but also for the existence of the university. The author traces the interpretation of uncertainty as a category of being in classical and non-classical philosophy, emphasizing its correlation with norms and ideals, highlighting the ethical and epistemological aspects of uncertainty. The digitalization of the educational sphere is considered as a risk factor that increases uncertainty and creates incomprehensibility as an informational state. The actual variants of responses to emerging challenges are analyzed in the context of the concepts of VUCA-world and BANI-world. The idea is put forward about the essential nature of uncertainty in relation to the university, the presence in its activities of opportunities for fundamental transformation, building a flexible construct of the university of the future based on research freedom, personalization and contextual orientation of education.
